DescriptionGolf in Vale do Lobo dates back to 1968 with two 9 hole courses – the Yellow and the Orange – designed by Sir Henry Cotton. Based on sketches left by Sir Henry, William “Rocky” Roquemore created a fourth 9 hole loop which, together with the Yellow, became known as the Royal Course. Situated between lakes and lush vegetation of pines and wildflowers, the Royal is widely regarded as being more difficult than its sister, the Ocean Course. The terrain is more undulating and it has a greater number of water hazards and sand barriers. The holes are longer and the pine, orange and olive trees regularly come into play. The 16th hole is famous: a demanding par three of 205 meters situated above the cliffs - it’s one of the most photographed golf holes in Europe.
