About the course

Howard Swan

The Boavista Golf & Spa Resort is part of a residential complex built on two hills. Bordering a natural reserve the course offers panoramic views of the Serra de Monchique hills, the town of Lagos and the ocean. The layout is divided into two distinct halves: holes 1 to 3 and 13 to 18 are surrounded by real estate and holes 4 to 12 by wild nature and breathtaking views. The course is surrounded by olive, almond and fig trees together with a scattering of palms. The 13th marks the point where water starts to come into play with a lake behind the green and another in front of the 14th green and the 15th includes a piece of the Old Course at St. Andrews - a replica of the famous Swilcan Bridge.

Boavista should be on everyone’s wish list!

Boavista is a par 71 championship course located about 15 minutes from Lagos in the western Algarve and, upon entering the estate in which it’s situated, there’s a distinct feeling of class. The steps that lead to the reception area just accentuate that feeling and once inside you know you’ve come to somewhere special.

The staff are extremely polite, professional and expedite, and the clubhouse restaurant has a comprehensive daytime menu at reasonable prices. However, what really catches the eye is the buffet breakfast. Unfortunately it only starts at 08:00 hours so book a later tee time if you want to enjoy it.

In the corridor that leads to the bar there are numerous boards registering the “Holes in One” that have occurred there since the opening of the course in 2002. There are quite a few which in a way is surprising as the five par 3’s are (with the exception of one) all around the 150m mark, and all require a degree of concentration - especially the 4th which is played over a huge chasm.

There are spectacular views down to the sea and across the rolling hills upon which the course is built. The tee boxes, fairways and greens are all immaculate and the local flora is varied and well-tended. The greens are generous, true and have a good speed with little grain - but they’re far from easy.

Boavista should be on everyone’s wish list. However, in my opinion it’s definitely a buggy course as there are no benches to relax on while waiting to tee off and, on a course with five par 3’s, and being as popular as it is, you really need to sit down for a while between holes. There also did not appear to be a Course Marshal encouraging players to keep moving which would have been helpful. It’s indeed for these reasons that I cannot give it a maximum rating of 5.

Rating out of 5: 4.5
